The Millennium Underground, M1, is the fastest way here from anywhere in central Pest. It runs under Andrássy Avenue from Vörösmarty tér out to Mexikói út, and Hősök tere station is about 4 minutes from the monument. The one thing to know is that it is stairs only.
The nicest way is to walk the avenue instead. It is about 35 minutes from Deák Ferenc tér, past the Opera House and the House of Terror, with the metro running underneath the whole way if the legs give out. Driving is the option not worth taking, because there is no car park at the square. This page has every route, the measured walks and the step-free way in.
Location and address
By public transport
Budapest’s BKK network reaches the square three ways: the M1 under Andrássy Avenue, seven bus routes and four trolleybus routes along Dózsa György út. The buses and trolleybuses are the useful ones if steps are a problem.
By metro

M1, the yellow line, Hősök tere. The Millennium Underground runs the whole length of Andrássy Avenue and was inscribed as World Heritage along with the avenue and this square. From the centre, board towards Mexikói út. From Deák Ferenc tér it is a straight run with no change.
The station is about 4 minutes from the monument, so it is not quite at the door. You come up on the Andrássy side, so the square opens out in front of you rather than behind.
It is stairs only, and BKK lists no step-free access anywhere on the M1. Anyone who needs a lift should take a bus or a trolleybus instead.
By bus
Seven routes use the Hősök tere M stops on Dózsa György út, about 4 minutes from the monument, beside the Museum of Fine Arts. Two of the platforms are sheltered, with benches and tactile paving.
- 20E, 30, 30A and 230 run between Keleti pályaudvar M and the northern districts, so they are the direct link from Keleti with no change at all
- 105 runs between Apor Vilmos tér in Buda and Gyöngyösi utca M. From Deák Ferenc tér, take it towards Gyöngyösi utca M
- 210 and 210B come up from Svábhegy and Normafa in the Buda hills and end at Gyöngyösi utca M
By trolleybus
- 75 and 79 stop at the Hősök tere M stops with the buses, in both directions, and again at Benczúr utca, on the Kunsthalle side of Dózsa György út, about 4 minutes from the monument. The 79 runs from Keleti pályaudvar M, so it is a second direct route from the station
- 72 stops at Honvédkórház (Hősök tere M), about 6 minutes west along Dózsa György út
- 81 stops at the Hősök tere M stops on Dózsa György út on its way to Dózsa György út M, and on the City Park side, at Hősök tere M (Gundel Károly út), on its way to Örs vezér tere
BKK runs low-floor vehicles on every trolleybus line in Budapest and underlines their departure times in the timetable, which makes a trolleybus a better bet than the metro if steps are difficult.
Not by tram
No tram stops within a sensible walk of Heroes’ Square. The nearest tram stops are all more than ten minutes away on foot, so if a route tells you to take a tram to the square, it is sending you the long way round.
On foot
The walking times below are measured along the streets from the Millennium Monument, not estimated.
From Deák Ferenc tér (about 35 minutes)
Straight up Andrássy Avenue, the whole length of it, ending at the square. It is a little over 2.7 kilometres and it is the walk the avenue was built for: the State Opera House at about 31 minutes from the square, the Oktogon at about 24, the House of Terror at about 19.
The M1 shadows the route with a station every few hundred metres, so this is a walk you can abandon at any point without penalty.
From the House of Terror (about 19 minutes)
About 1.4 kilometres of upper Andrássy Avenue, where the street widens, the traffic thins and the villas start. This is the better half of the avenue to walk if you only want to do part of it.
From the Budapest Zoo (about 6 minutes)
From the Zoo main gate, follow Állatkerti körút south until it reaches the square. Flat and paved the whole way.
By car and taxi
If you must come by car, the nearest car park worth naming is the Budapest Zoo’s own Parkoló ZOOna at Állatkerti körút 16, about 10 minutes away on foot through the park. A taxi or a Bolt can drop you on Dózsa György út at either museum, which puts you two or three minutes from the monument. Ask for “Hősök tere” and you will not be misunderstood.
By hop-on hop-off bus
Accessibility
The square itself is one of the easiest places in Budapest to visit in a wheelchair. Getting to it is where the planning goes.
- The square is flat, paved and step-free across its whole area, and all four approaches come in level
- The Millennium Underground is not step-free. Hősök tere station is stairs only, and BKK lists no step-free access anywhere on the M1. Do not plan to arrive that way
- Use the Hősök tere M stops on Dózsa György út instead. Both sheltered platforms are step-free and have tactile paving, and buses 20E, 30, 30A, 105, 210, 210B and 230 and trolleybuses 75 and 79 call there
- Over 90% of Budapest’s buses are low-floor, and only low-floor buses run at night and all day at weekends. Low-floor vehicles run on every trolleybus line too, with their departure times underlined in the timetable, and trolleybus 79 runs only low-floor vehicles in the daytime
- Both museums beside the square are step-free. The Museum of Fine Arts has an outside lift on the right of the main steps that you can use on your own during opening hours. The Kunsthalle is reached by a lift on the left side of the main entrance staircase, worked by a member of staff after you ring and speak to them through the microphone, and it also serves the lower Mélycsarnok level and its accessible toilet
