Dohány Street Synagogue Tours

The guided tour run by the synagogue’s own visitor team. It starts every 30 to 60 minutes through the day and lasts 45 minutes, covering the main hall, the cemetery garden and the Memorial Park with the Tree of Life. Tours run even if you are the only one waiting.

There is nothing to book beyond your entry ticket. Once you are through security, go into the main hall, find the flag for your language among the pews and sit in that section until the guide arrives. Several languages are being spoken in the hall at the same time, so sit near the front of your group.

The guides are the best thing about the visit, both for what they know and for the care with which they tell a hard story. The tour is optional, and you may not film or record it.

Two hours with one English-speaking guide, in a group of no more than 25. You meet in front of the synagogue at 10:00 and the guide takes you through the building, the Jewish Museum, the cemetery and the Memorial Park, with the Jewish Quarter around it as the wider subject.

What you gain over the included tour is continuity. One person tells the whole story, in English, at your group’s pace, and the museum is part of it. When we checked in mid-September it ran on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The strongest fit for first-time Budapest visitors who want neighbourhood context. It cannot be refunded or rescheduled, so be sure of your date.

The deepest single-tour visit available. Four hours, starting at 10:00 from the front of the Dohány Street Synagogue, with entry to both Dohány and the Kazinczy Street Synagogue, the Jewish Museum, the Jewish Centre and the Memorial Park.

The walk between them ties the neighbourhood story together, by way of the Carl Lutz memorial and Gozsdu Passage. The Heroes’ Temple is seen from outside.

It is the only one of the Tiqets tours you can cancel, free until 23:59 on the day before. Four hours on your feet is a long morning, so wear comfortable shoes and dress for both synagogues.

Hungaria Koncert, the company whose board the Tiqets guides carry, also sells its tour through GetYourGuide. The two-hour version includes the guide, the walk, and entry to the Dohány Street Synagogue, the Jewish Museum and the Memorial Park. A four-hour option adds entry to the Rumbach Street Synagogue and the ghetto wall exhibition.

The reason to pick this listing is the terms. You can cancel free up to 24 hours ahead, or reserve now and pay later. You are asked to bring a passport or ID card, and it is listed as not suitable for wheelchair users.

If you have an hour and a half, the included guided tour plus a look round the museum is enough. Two hours gets you a guide of your own and the streets outside. Half a day is needed for the Grand Tour.

The synagogue’s own guided tours take whoever is waiting in that language, so numbers vary. The two-hour walking tour is capped at 25. If you want a more personal experience, the synagogue also runs a private Secret Tour of rooms that are otherwise closed, by appointment and sold only at its own ticket office.

If the synagogue is your only target, the Fast Track Ticket with its included tour is enough. If you want neighbourhood context, the walking tour adds the Jewish Quarter. If you want both major synagogues, the Grand Tour includes Kazinczy.

You can walk round the whole complex on your own, and the museum has a free audio guide in its Milev app. A guide is what turns the hall and the courtyard from things to look at into a story, though, which is why we would join the included tour at least.
