One thing worth knowing upfront: the Parliament’s interior tour is run by the National Assembly’s own visitor team and follows a fixed 45-minute route through the Holy Crown chamber, the Grand Staircase, the Dome Hall, and the Old Upper House. External tour operators cannot lead groups inside the building. Most third-party “Parliament tours” are guided experiences around the riverfront and Castle District that include skip-the-line entry to the official tour, then hand you off at the Visitor Centre.

Castle District + Parliament Combo Tour
A half-day guided tour that bundles Buda Castle with skip-the-line entry to the Parliament. Hotel-area pickup, transport between sites, and an English-speaking guide are all included, so you cover Budapest’s two flagship landmarks without juggling separate tickets and metro fares.
The external guide takes you through the Castle District, providing context for Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and Fisherman’s Bastion. After lunch (not included), the group transfers to Pest, where you join the Parliament’s own 45-minute interior tour with skip-the-line entry. The external guide does not accompany you inside; the Parliament’s staff lead the underground portion.

How to Choose the Right Tour
Consider your time
If Budapest is a 2-night city break, the combo tour packs Parliament and Castle into one morning and removes most of the planning. If you have 4+ days and prefer to set your own pace, the direct tour gives you full flexibility on time slot and language.
Decide on group size
The Parliament’s own tours run with up to ~30 people per group, which is typical for state-led visitor experiences. Combo tours are small to mid-sized for the external walking portion, then merge into the standard Parliament tour group inside. If you want a more personal experience, look for a private tour.
Think about what else you want to see
If the Parliament is your only target, the direct tour is enough. If you also want Buda Castle, the combo tour covers both in one morning with transport included. For the wider riverfront (Shoes on the Danube, St. Stephen’s Basilica, Chain Bridge), neither tour goes there; plan a separate walk afterwards.
Self-guided vs guided
Every Parliament ticket includes a live guide and an audio handset, so there is no truly self-guided option. The choice is whether you want extra guided context outside the building (combo tour) or just the official interior tour (direct). The audio guide is well-produced and adds context inside the Parliament regardless of which option you pick.

When to book
Book as early as your dates allow, especially for visits in summer (June to August), when English-language slots between 10:00 and 15:00 sell out 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Spring and autumn shoulder seasons usually allow 1 to 2 weeks; winter often has slots available a few days out.
Where to book
Book Parliament tickets and combo tours online. Both come from established operators with flexible cancellation on most tours. Check reviews from recent travellers to filter out tours with weak guides or unclear meeting points.

Cancellation policies
Online bookings typically offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Direct tickets are non-refundable within 24 hours of the slot, with automatic full refunds if the Parliament cancels for state events. Always read the specific terms on the booking page before purchasing.

Opening Hours
The Visitor Centre is open daily, with first tours from 8:00 and last tours typically 16:00 (later in summer). Closed on a small set of Hungarian public holidays.

Getting There
M2 (red) metro to Kossuth Lajos tér is the closest, with an exit 30 seconds from the Visitor Centre. Trams 2 and 2A stop at the riverfront with one of Budapest’s best moving Parliament views, and buses 15, 115, and 178 also stop at Kossuth Lajos tér.

Accessibility
Step-free access via the Visitor Centre lift to all main public areas on the tour route. Wheelchair users are welcomed; assistance dogs are permitted. Notify the Visitor Centre 24 hours ahead for additional support.
Insider Tips
Book the 8:00 first slot for the quietest experience
Most groups don’t start before 10:00, so the first tour of the morning is noticeably calmer in the Holy Crown chamber and the Grand Staircase. Combo tours pick up from hotels around 9:00 to 9:30, so they don’t fill the early slots.
Combo tours sometimes hold the only available slots
In peak season, pre-allocated Parliament slots on combo tickets can stay available even when direct booking shows “sold out”. Check the combo before assuming Parliament is unreachable for your dates.
Don’t book back-to-back tours
A Parliament tour at 10:00 and a Castle District walking tour at 11:30 sounds doable but rarely works in practice. The Visitor Centre exit corridor eats 15 to 20 minutes and the M2 across the river adds another 15. Allow at least 90 minutes between bookings.
State events can cancel tours with little warning
If a foreign head of state is in Budapest, parts or all of the Parliament can close at very short notice. Refunds are automatic but you will want a backup plan for the day. Check the Foreign Ministry calendar a week or two ahead if your dates include 15 March, 20 August, or 23 October.
