How to Get to the House of Terror Museum

The House of Terror Museum sits on Andrássy út, Budapest’s grand boulevard between Erzsébet tér and Heroes’ Square, with the M1 metro running underneath it. The nearest station is Vörösmarty utca, about 100 m away, and trams 4 and 6 stop at Oktogon, about 220 m down the avenue. Driving is neither necessary nor advisable.

One thing catches people out. The M1 has a Vörösmarty utca and a Vörösmarty tér, and they are a long way apart. The museum’s station is Vörösmarty utca, the street, in the middle of the line. Vörösmarty tér, the square, is the terminus by the river.

By public transport

The museum’s own advice is the M1 or trams 4 and 6, and that covers almost everyone. Buy a single ticket, a travel card or a Budapest Card before boarding, and validate a single ticket before you travel.

By metro

  • M1, Vörösmarty utca: the closest, about 100 m from the museum. Both entrances are on Andrássy út. Come up and the black frame is in front of you. Stairs only
  • M1, Oktogon: about 250 m down the avenue towards the centre. Useful if you are changing from the tram. Stairs only
  • From the centre: the M1 leaves from Vörösmarty tér and Deák Ferenc tér, where it meets the M2 and M3, and runs the length of Andrássy út in the direction of Heroes’ Square. Get off at Vörösmarty utca, not at the square

None of the M1 stations has a lift, so anyone who cannot manage stairs should use the tram.

By tram

  • Trams 4 and 6, Oktogon: the Grand Boulevard trams stop where the boulevard crosses Andrássy út, about 220 m from the museum. Walk along the avenue away from the centre, towards Heroes’ Square, and the museum is on the left
  • The Oktogon tram stop is level with the street, which makes this the step-free way to arrive. From Nyugati station, Margaret Bridge or the Buda side, it is also the direct one

By bus

  • Bus 105 runs along Andrássy út and stops at Vörösmarty utca M, on the avenue about 130 m from the museum, and at Oktogon M. Other lines along the avenue use the same stops
  • Budapest’s buses are mostly low-floor

On foot

The times below are measured along the streets, not guessed. All of them are flat.

From the State Opera House (about 11 minutes)

Walk along Andrássy út away from the centre, with the Opera behind you. Cross the Grand Boulevard at Oktogon and the museum is a block further on, on the left, with the black frame in view well before you reach it.

From St. Stephen’s Basilica (about 16 minutes)

From the back of the Basilica, walk up Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út to the start of Andrássy út, then along the avenue past the Opera House and across Oktogon. The museum is on the left.

From Nyugati station (about 11 minutes)

Leave the station onto the Grand Boulevard and follow it to Oktogon, or ride one stop on tram 4 or 6. Turn onto Andrássy út away from the centre and the museum is about 220 m along on the left.

From Heroes’ Square (about 20 minutes)

Walk down Andrássy út towards the centre, the whole length of the avenue’s leafy upper section. The museum is on the right, a block before the Oktogon crossroads.

By car and taxi

If you must drive, the nearest car park is the multi-storey Oktogon Parkolóház, about 200 m west of the museum. Taxis and Bolt, the rideshare app that works in Budapest, can set you down on Andrássy út at number 60. Ask for “Terror Háza” and every driver knows it.

Accessibility

The museum publishes no accessibility statement, so this is what we can stand behind.

  • Getting there step-free: trams 4 and 6 to Oktogon, whose stop is level with the street, then about 220 m along the flat pavement of Andrássy út. The M1 stations have stairs only
  • Inside: the route runs down through four levels, from the second floor to the basement, and the descent to the cellar is by lift. The walking tour we link to, which includes entry, is sold as wheelchair accessible
  • The reconstructed cells are cramped by design, so do not count on getting into every one
  • Disabled visitors and one companion enter free with an official disability ID card from their home country
  • Assistance dogs with their identifying signs are allowed in; other animals are not
  • Cloakroom: compulsory for every backpack and any bag larger than A3, and free
