City Park itself has no opening hours at all. There is no gate to lock, no ticket desk to staff and no published closing time, so you can walk through it at four in the morning if you want to.
Everything standing in it is another matter, and there are about a dozen timetables. The House of Music alone keeps a separate one for each part of the building, and one of those shuts for two more days every month on top of its weekly closing day. Two of the park’s biggest draws work to opposite seasons and are each shut for more than half the year.
This page puts them all in one table, says when the park is at its best, and covers how long to give it.

Peak at the ice rink means Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, plus public holidays and the winter school break. Everything else is the normal period. A peak ticket is good in either, while a normal one has to be topped up at the cash desk if you turn up in peak time.
The Gatehouse Tower’s closing time is the one thing the museum’s own pages disagree about, so we are not printing one. Go in the morning and the question does not arise.
Best times to visit City Park
Time of day
Before nine the park belongs to runners, dog walkers and people cutting through to work, and the paths round the castle are as empty as they get. That is the hour for photographs of Vajdahunyad without anybody in them.
The middle of the day is when the museums fill, and the queue at the balloon is longest, so it is the worst time for either and the best for the playgrounds and the sports courts.
Evening is the park’s other good slot, and in the skating season it is the best of the lot. The castle and the paths are lit, the rink runs until nine most nights, and the Musical Fountain is lit from dusk.
Day of the week

Monday is the day to plan around rather than avoid. The House of Music, the Museum of Ethnography’s exhibitions and the Agricultural Museum are all shut, which removes most of the indoor options at once.
What stays open is worth knowing: the Gatehouse Tower at the castle, the Museum of Ethnography’s entrance hall and the free Visitor Centre exhibition inside it, and the whole of the park. A wet Monday is still a workable half day here, as long as you know that before you set off.
At the other end of the week, Friday afternoon turns the ice rink into peak period and keeps it that way until Sunday evening, so a weekday session is both quieter and a different ticket.
Season

Summer gives you the boats, the stream in the Main Playground, the sports courts and long evenings, and takes away shade on the open stretches. Winter gives you the ice, which is the thing this park is best known for, and the lit castle behind it.
Autumn and early spring are the two stretches when the water does nothing at all. They are still good months for the park, because the museums, the castle, the towers and the balloon are unaffected and the paths are at their quietest, but do not come for the lake and expect to find it working.
If the water is the reason you are coming, the safe months are June to early September for a boat and December to February for skates.
How long to spend in City Park
An hour
Heroes’ Square to Vajdahunyad Castle and back, with the walk up to the castle and a look at the courtyard. Enough to see why people come.
Half a day
What we would plan for. One of the two new museums, the castle and a tower, and the playground or the water, with the walk between them.
A full day
Add Széchenyi Thermal Bath or the Zoo. Either one takes an afternoon on its own, which is why half a day is not enough with one in the plan.
An evening
In the skating season the rink runs to nine most nights and the castle is lit, so an evening works as a visit in its own right.
Insider tips
Last admission at Vajdahunyad is earlier than you think
The museum stops admitting half an hour before it closes, and the last Apostles’ Tower tour starts a full hour before. Tower tours leave on the hour, so turning up at ten past four for a five o’clock closing means the last one has already gone and you have twenty minutes to get into the museum.
At the rink, the cash desk shuts before the ice does
The cash desk shuts and the last skaters are let in 60 minutes before the rink closes, so an online ticket does not buy you a later start. The ice itself clears ten minutes before the building closes.
Rink tickets are not for a fixed day
A normal-period ticket works on any Monday to Thursday or Friday morning until the season ends, and a peak ticket on any Friday afternoon, weekend or public holiday. So an unused one is not wasted if the weather turns, as long as you come back before the season ends.
