Béla Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies at the Bem Mozi
Thursday 15 October

Tarr's film from 2000, in Hungarian with English subtitles. A town on the Great Hungarian Plain, and a crowd that turns.
About the event
The frost is hard and there is no snow, and hundreds stand round the circus tent on the main square waiting to see the one attraction, the preserved carcass of a whale. They come in from the farms round about and from much further off, a silent, faceless crowd wrapped in rags. The strangers and the cold upset a town that was never settled to begin with, the ambitious see their chance, and the figure of the Prince, hidden behind the whale, sets the rest alight. Lars Rudolph, Hanna Schygulla and János Derzsi lead the cast. It runs 145 minutes in black and white, and the cinema does not recommend it for under twelves.
