Treasure of the month: a thaler hoard from Somló Hill

Twenty-seven silver thalers, turned up by a plough at the foot of Somló Hill in June and in a case in Budapest by the end of the summer. They went into the ground during the Fifteen Years' War and nobody ever came back for them.
About the event
The museum's volunteer metal detecting team found the coins scattered by ploughing near Borszörcsök, eleven of them inside a single square metre. A test trench opened the next day gave up one more thaler and pieces of a coarse red pottery vessel, though it is not clear the pot ever held the hoard. Eighteen coins came from Ferdinand II's mints at Hall in Tirol and Ensisheim, and the rest from Rudolf II, Lübeck, the Palatinate, Brunswick, Brandenburg and St Gallen. The closing coin, struck at Körmöcbánya in 1593, fixes the earliest year the hoard could have gone under. The find came out of the museum's Community Archaeology Programme.
