Nixon in China at the Eiffel Art Studios
20 to 24 November

John Adams's opera about an American president's five-day visit to Mao's China, sung in English in the Opera's converted railway workshop. András Almási-Tóth's staging was the work's Hungarian premiere.
About the event
Alice Goodman wrote the libretto, and Adams's score works against the dispassion of a news report, so much of its tragicomic force comes from the distance between the two sides' worlds and manners. Pat Nixon gets an act to herself as she is shown the new China, and the marriage of Mao and Chiang Ch'ing turns out to sit behind the ideology. Gregory Vajda conducts, with Károly Szemerédy as Nixon, Klára Kolonits as Pat, János Szemenyei as Mao and Rita Rácz as Chiang Ch'ing. Sebastian Hannak designed the set, lighting and video for the hall. Surtitles in Hungarian and English, one interval, and not recommended under 16.
