József Árendás's posters and drawings at the Műcsarnok
25 September to 22 November

A condensed retrospective of one of the big names in Hungarian cultural poster design, mounted for his eightieth birthday. Film posters from the 1970s, the theatre posters he began in the eighties, and the ones he has since made purely as art.
About the event
Gréta Garami curated it, and the idea was to reveal Árendás's creative DNA rather than catalogue every job, tracing how his style developed and which themes he kept returning to. The emphasis falls on his draughtsmanship, a skill that has grown rare in graphic design, which is why drawings hang alongside the finished posters, and on the way he mixes traditional and digital methods. Intellectual humour, wry irony, bold visual metaphor and witty association run through the work. Old street advertising columns are built into the room, so the posters stand where they were meant to be seen. It is ticketed, and hangs in the Műcsarnok's chamber hall.
