Beethoven's Ninth for New Year at the Opera House

1 to 3 January

Photo: Hungarian State Opera

For the fourteenth year, the Opera starts January with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, played in Mahler's reworking. The finale is sung in German, with English surtitles.

About the event

Mahler made his version in 1895. He added no new ideas, but widened Beethoven's dynamics at both ends, brought in extra timpani and four more horns, doubled the woodwind and strings, and swapped natural horns and trumpets for valved ones, leaving the voices and the tempos as Beethoven wrote them. Before the interval come Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, also in Mahler's version, and Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major with Barnabás Baranyai, one of the Opera's own soloists. Gábor Hontvári conducts the Opera's orchestra and chorus, with Lilla Horti, Atala Schöck, István Kovácsházi and Krisztián Cser singing. Surtitles are also in Hungarian and German, and the Opera does not recommend it for children under 12.
