Mahler's Sixth for János Kovács at 75
Thursday 10 December

The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra marks the seventy-fifth birthday year of the conductor János Kovács by handing him Mahler's Sixth Symphony, among the heaviest things he wrote.
About the event
Mahler wrote the Sixth in his early forties and gave it no subtitle, though it is sometimes called the Tragic, and along with the Seventh it is heard less often than the rest. The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra presents the evening, with Kovács himself on the podium. There are four movements: a march, then a scherzo, an andante and a substantial finale. The nickname makes sense once you hear the sombre opening and notice that the slow movement quotes the first of the Kindertotenlieder. The evening runs about two and a half hours.
