Halloween evening at Budapest Zoo

The zoo shuts at its usual time, then opens the gates again at 18:00 and spends five hours in the dark. Day tickets and zoo passes are not valid for it, and no more than seven thousand people can be on the grounds at once.

About the event

Blood is the theme. A strand of talks, Vérvonalak, the dark secrets of nature, asks why some animals drink it, what turns a plant blood red and what a single drop tells a vet, alongside dye plants, herbs and potions. The animal shows bring out the creeping and the dangerous, a snake included, with courage tests for whoever claims to be the bravest in the family. Fire jugglers and LED acts perform around the grounds, and witches tell fortunes at the Banyatanya. Sound and light effects are used, parts of the zoo are closed off for safety and for the animals' sake, and with no street lighting in the grounds some paths have only mood and guide lights. Admission and the on-site tills close at 21:00.
