Concerto Budapest: Brahms, Walton and Strauss
Wednesday 9 December

Frank Peter Zimmermann plays Walton's Violin Concerto with Concerto Budapest under the Norwegian conductor Arvid Engegård, set between Brahms's Academic Festival Overture and Also sprach Zarathustra.
About the event
Concerto Budapest presents the evening and calls the programme a concert sandwich: two nineteenth-century German orchestral works with a twentieth-century English concerto in the middle. Brahms wrote the Academic Festival Overture for the award of an honorary doctorate and filled it with the noise of student life. Walton finished his Violin Concerto almost sixty years later, at the request of Jascha Heifetz, which explains how much it asks of the soloist. The whole second half goes to Richard Strauss's symphonic poem, whose title page carries the words "freely after Friedrich Nietzsche". The concert runs about two and a half hours.
