Carmen at the Opera House
14 to 29 November

Calixto Bieito moves Bizet's opera from nineteenth-century Seville to Spain just after Franco, with none of the flamenco prettiness. His staging has been seen around the world and reached Budapest in 2021. Sung in French, with surtitles in English.
About the event
The Catalan director cuts into a story rather than decorating it, and what he finds here is a savage world played straight. Gábor Hontvári conducts the Opera's orchestra and chorus. Carmen talks the corporal Don José into letting her go after a fight at the tobacco factory, then pulls him away from his regiment and from Micaëla, the girl his mother sent after him, and by the last act she has left him for the bullfighter Escamillo and he cannot accept it. Surtitles also run in Hungarian and French. Four acts with one interval, and the house does not recommend it for anyone under 16, because of sexual content.
