Saturday 19 December

Hungarian Radio's orchestra and choir perform Charpentier's Midnight Mass for Christmas, built on French carol tunes, in Matthias Church, with a Bach cantata to begin.

About the event

Hungarian Radio presents the concert, with its Symphony Orchestra and Choir under Máté Szabó Sipos, and the sopranos Márta Stefanik and Júlia Balázs and the bass Lóránt Najbauer as soloists. Charpentier wrote his Latin Messe de minuit pour Noël in 1694 for the midnight Mass and drew on well-known French Christmas tunes, some of which counted as distinctly worldly in their day. His name and music were then forgotten for a long time. Bach's cantata Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, written for the feast of the Annunciation, is built from start to finish on a hymn tune that other composers set too. Tickets are sold through Hungarian Radio's ticket shop, and their price can change with demand.
