The American Dream, Hungarians in the United States 1776 to 2026
30 July to 1 November

Two and a half centuries of Hungarian lives in America, told through the objects and personal mementoes that survived overseas. It fills the grandest rooms the National Museum has.
About the event
The museum built this for the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, and hung it on the grand staircase, under the dome and in the fireplace rooms beside them. The first object is a Ford Model T, whose planetary transmission and chassis were designed by József Galamb, the engineer from Makó whom Henry Ford hired in 1904 and whose way of organising the work made the assembly line possible.
Mementoes of Lajos Kossuth, Albert Szent-Györgyi, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Zita Szeleczky follow, set against the quieter records of people who simply built a living overseas. The museum is open every day but Monday.
