The Basilica is an active parish church as well as a visitor attraction, and it is compact enough that an hour with a guide covers the dome, the main altar, the side altars and the Holy Right properly. Types of tour
One-hour guided tour of the church
You meet the guide in front of the ticket office and go straight in. The hour covers the story of the building, the mosaics and statues, the main altar and the Holy Right, with a guide who can answer questions as you go.
On the extended option your ticket also covers the Panorama Terrace and the Treasury. The guide does not go up with you. Once the hour is over you visit both at your own pace, so allow about two hours in all. The private option is the one where the guide takes you round the terrace and the Treasury too.

Tour and music performance
A 90-minute tour with a licensed Hungarian guide that starts outside, with the facade and the story of why the church took more than 50 years to build, then moves inside for the sculptures, mosaics, altars and the Holy Right. The guide also gives a short run through Hungarian history by way of the saints and kings whose statues fill the building.
It ends with music. On most options that means Hungarian folk songs sung by the guide. One option swaps the folk songs for an organ concert in the Basilica, so check which you are booking.

Wednesday morning with the organist
Not a tour of the building, but the closest you can get to its biggest instrument. A guide takes a group of up to 15 up to the organ gallery, where one of the Basilica’s organists explains what each part of the organ does and then plays a 20-minute concert. The ticket includes Basilica entry, so you look round the church afterwards on your own.

How to choose
Consider your time
If you only have an hour, the standard guided tour is the single best product. If you have two hours and want the view, take its extended option, which covers the church with a guide and the terrace and Treasury on your own. The 90-minute tour suits an unhurried afternoon.
Decide on group size
The public tours run as small groups, and both operators sell a private version capped at your own party. The Wednesday organ programme is limited to 15 people.
Think about who you are visiting with
An hour is about right for children. The terrace is reached by lifts and stairs, or by 364 steps if you would rather climb, and children must be with an adult up there. Anyone who cannot manage stairs should stay with the church-only tour.
Self-guided vs guided
The church, the Treasury and the Panorama Terrace are easy to navigate without a guide. A guide adds most value in the church itself, where the altars, statues and mosaics all tell a story about Hungarian history that is not obvious from looking. On the terrace the view needs no explaining.
