There is no closing time at the Fisherman’s Bastion. The courtyard, the arcades and the staircase are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, free at all times. The upper lookout has ticket hours, from 09:00 to 19:00 for most of the year and to 21:00 in summer; it is open and free outside those hours.

Best times to visit
Time of day
Sunset is the single best slot for the views. The Parliament’s river front faces the bastion and takes the evening sun. The upper lookout is still in ticket hours at sunset for much of the year, but the arcades give essentially the same view for free.
The first hour after dark is the second-best slot. The Hungarian Parliament is lit up, the bastion itself is lit, and the upper lookout is free from 19:00, or from 21:00 between June and September.
Early morning is the calmest of the day. Come before 09:00 and you get soft light, very few people and the upper lookout without a ticket.
Avoid the middle of the day in summer. The bastion can feel packed and the photos all have other visitors in them.
Day of the week
Weekdays are calmer than weekends on Castle Hill in general. Tour groups arrive by coach through the middle of the day, and a summer Saturday is as busy as it gets.
The guided walks have their own calendar. When we checked in mid-September, the two-hour Walking Tour of Buda ran on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 14:00.
Season
June to September is the busiest season, August above all, and it is also when ticket hours run late, to 21:00. Midday visits feel packed; mornings and evenings are the comfortable windows.
April, May and October are the shoulder months. Comfortable weather, the Castle Hill greenery at its best, and ticket hours that end at 19:00, so the upper lookout is free again before sunset on the longer days.
Winter is the quiet season, and a cold one on an exposed hilltop. The upper lookout still needs a ticket during the day, apart from the free week from 24 December to 1 January.

Insider tips
In summer the free evening starts at 21:00, not 19:00
From 1 June to 30 September the upper lookout charges until 21:00, which is after sunset all summer. A free sunset from the turrets only works in April and May, when the sun goes down after the ticket hours end at 19:00. In high summer, watch the sunset from the arcades and go up once the ticket hours end.
Use the free days
On 15 March, 20 August and 23 October the upper lookout is free all day. They are national holidays, so expect company.
Pair the visit with the funicular’s hours
The Buda Castle Funicular runs from 08:00 to 22:00 and takes a maintenance day on Mondays of odd-numbered weeks. If you plan to ride it down after dark, leave the bastion in good time. The Castle buses are the fallback.
