Budapest dinner cruises

Book a dinner cruise in Budapest and you spend two hours or so at a table on the Danube, with the Parliament going past the window. What sets the boats apart is the evening around the meal: a band, a folk dance show, an operetta, or drinks that keep coming.

Our pick is the Legenda candlelit dinner, two and a half hours with live music, from its own pier on Vigadó tér.

Which dinner cruise is right for you

What each Budapest dinner cruise is like

Book Legenda for a candlelit dinner with live music

A diner at a window table with a glass of wine on a Legenda dinner cruise, the Parliament outside across the river

Legenda’s dinner boat leaves its own pier at the Elisabeth Bridge end of the Vigadó tér quay, and at two and a half hours it is, with the River Diva, the longest dinner on this page. You choose each of the four courses at the table from a few options, children get three courses, and the welcome drink is champagne, wine, beer, a soft drink or water. Hungarian musicians play live through the evening.

You can’t pick your table. Seats go in the order the bookings came in, a table can’t be reserved ahead, and a window is not guaranteed. There is no vegan menu, children under 3 can’t come, and this boat is not wheelchair accessible.

Take the River Diva if you want the drinks included

A chef at the buffet on a River Diva dinner cruise, with platters of salmon, fruit, cheeses and a carved roast

The River Diva is the only dinner cruise here with the drinks in the ticket: cocktails, spirits, prosecco, wine, beer and soft drinks, brought to your table for two and a half hours. Dinner is a seasonal buffet with vegetarian dishes, a band plays live, and in good weather you can go up to the rooftop deck.

It sails mainly from Thursday to Sunday, from Akadémia 3, a short way north of the Chain Bridge on the Pest bank, at 19:30. Neither a window seat nor a particular table is promised, and tips are not included.

Pick the Vigadó 6 boat for a folk band and a folklore show

Musicians with a cimbalom and a double bass playing between the tables on a Budapest Sightseeing dinner cruise

Budapest Sightseeing’s dinner is the folk evening. The Ökrös Band plays Hungarian folk music live, there’s a folklore performance on board, and dinner is four courses served at the table, from four menus: two traditional Hungarian, one vegetarian and one with poultry, plus menus for children.

It boards at Vigadó 6, between Mahart’s pontoon and Legenda’s, and leaves at 19:30. Only the welcome drink is included and you can’t bring your own on board, so read the drinks menu on the table before you order.

See the folk dance show on the Gróf Széchenyi

The Gróf Széchenyi, a long white river ship, sailing along the Pest bank of the Danube in front of a row of old apartment buildings

This is the shorter folk evening, an hour and a half on the Gróf Széchenyi or the Stadt Wien from Akadémia 2, by the Pest end of the Chain Bridge. There’s live cimbalom music and a Hungarian folk dance show, and dinner is a plated four courses from three menus.

On a February evening the musicians came round to play at the tables, and between courses we went out on deck for photos of the Parliament. Being the shortest of the dinners, it gives you the least time on the water, and every drink after the welcome one is extra.

Choose Silverline's dinner for four courses and no show

A plated main course on a Silverline dinner cruise

Silverline’s plain dinner cruise is four courses and a welcome drink over two hours, with live background music rather than a show, and there’s a vegetarian menu. It leaves Dock 11, right next to Elisabeth Bridge, at 18:30 in late autumn, so it is, with the operetta dinner, the earliest sailing on this page.

Children aged 3 and under don’t get the dinner, though there’s an à la carte menu on board for them. Pets are not allowed except service animals, and Silverline’s boats are not wheelchair accessible.

Pay for the window seat on Silverline's operetta dinner

A Silverline catamaran passing the floodlit Parliament on the Danube at night

The same company’s operetta dinner adds a folklore and operetta show to the four courses, on a two-hour sailing from Dock 11. The show is in the larger room on board, where the view from the tables in the middle is not as good as from the window, so take the option with a window seat.

This is the only ticket on the page you can’t cancel or move, so book it once your dates are fixed. Drinks after the welcome drink are extra.

Try the wine cruise for a tasting rather than a dinner

A small tasting course and glasses of wine on a table on the Danube wine cruise

The wine cruise is a tasting, not a dinner: five Hungarian wines and five small food courses, with a talk about the wines, while the Rajkó Orchestra plays. It sails on the Gróf Széchenyi from Akadémia at 19:00, for two hours with an hour and a half of sightseeing.

Only the five wines are included, so any other drink goes on a bill. You can cancel free until 23:59 the day before.

How to book and board a Budapest dinner cruise

  1. Choose the menu and the seat as you book

The Budapest Sightseeing menus are in the downloads on its booking page, and Silverline’s window seat for the operetta dinner is an option at checkout.

  2. Get to Silverline's Dock 11 half an hour early

Silverline boards its dinner boats 30 minutes before they sail, and a late arrival pays extra to move to another sailing. For every boat, the piers map shows where it boards and the walk from the nearest stop.

Insider tips

Check what a small child gets

Legenda doesn’t take children under 3. On Silverline, dinner isn’t included for children aged 3 and under, and they order from the à la carte menu on board. Budapest Sightseeing has its own menus for children.

Check the pier on your voucher on the day

One October evening our Budapest Sightseeing boat boarded from a different pontoon from the one we’d booked. Look at the voucher again on the day of the cruise, not only when you book.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear on a Budapest dinner cruise?

Smart casual. That is Legenda's dress code for its candlelit dinner, and it is a safe level for any of the dinner boats.

Is there a vegetarian or vegan dinner cruise in Budapest?

Vegetarian, yes. The River Diva's buffet has vegetarian dishes, and the Budapest Sightseeing folk dinner and the Silverline dinner both have a vegetarian menu. Legenda's candlelit dinner has no vegan menu, so check the menu on the booking page before you book a vegan meal on any of them.

Which Budapest dinner cruise has a folk show or operetta?

Three of them. The Budapest Sightseeing dinner from Vigadó 6 has a live folk band and a folklore performance, the Gróf Széchenyi dinner from Akadémia 2 has cimbalom music and a Hungarian folk dance show, and Silverline's operetta dinner from Dock 11 has a folklore and operetta show.

Can I book a window table on a Danube dinner cruise?

On Silverline's operetta dinner, yes, as an option when you book. Legenda seats you in the order the bookings came in and cannot promise a window, and the River Diva does not guarantee a window or a particular table either.

What if the Legenda dinner cruise is sold out?

Look at the River Diva, which sails from Akadémia 3 with drinks included, mainly from Thursday to Sunday, or the Budapest Sightseeing folk dinner from Vigadó 6. Both are two hours or more, both leave at 19:30, and both can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead.
