Tosca in concert at the Opera House

10 to 18 November

Photo: Hungarian State Opera

Puccini's thriller in the Opera's IC format: the iron curtain stays down, a video installation plays across it, and the singers come through the door in it to sing from the front of the stage. In Italian, with surtitles in English.

About the event

The house built the series for evenings when the stage is still needed for rehearsals, and it offers more than a concert performance. The steel curtain, 170 square metres of it and engraved with Miklós Ybl's designs, doubles as an acoustic reflector, with the surtitles carried along the top. The orchestra plays from the pit as usual. The soloists sing without scores, in period costume, acting with face and hands, while the chorus is spread through the building so the sound reaches you from several directions. Cavaradossi hides an escaped prisoner, which brings Scarpia to Tosca, and all three are dead by the end. Not recommended for children under 12.
