The Klezmatics: We Were Made For These Times
Monday 9 November

The New York band that pulled klezmer into the present is forty this year and touring on an album of protest songs. Yiddish dance music with jazz, Latin, Balkan and punk worked into it.
About the event
Müpa is producing the concert. Lorin Sklamberg sings and plays piano and accordion, Frank London is on trumpet and keyboards, Lisa Gutkin on violin, Matt Darriau on clarinet, saxophone and kaval, Richie Barshay on drums and percussion, and Paul Morrissett on bass guitar and cimbalom. They formed in 1986 and were among the first big names in klezmer at the point when world music was becoming a category of its own, and they remain the only klezmer group to have won a Grammy. Their songs deal with human rights, diaspora and cultural resistance as much as with dancing. It runs about two hours.
