Iveta Apkalna and the State Choir LATVIJA

The Latvian organist Iveta Apkalna plays Müpa's Christmas organ concert, and brings a sixty-strong choir over from home. Carols, Bach and Poulenc sit alongside newer Baltic choral writing.
About the event
Apkalna made her name as resident artist at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The State Choir LATVIJA, whose artistic director is Maris Sirmais, sings the Baltic repertoire that runs through the programme. The first half sets an arrangement of Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming against Pärt's Pari intervallo, Britten's Te Deum in C, and pieces by Rihards Dubra and Pēteris Vasks. After the interval come Bach's Fantasia in G, Poulenc's Four Christmas Motets, Jēkabs Jančevskis's arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and his own Love Will Grow Someday, and three motets by Thierry Escaich. It runs about two and a half hours. Müpa is producing it.
