The Fountain of Bakhchisarai at the Opera House

3 to 15 November

Photo: Hungarian State Opera

A cornerstone of Russian ballet drama, after Pushkin's poem, first danced in this house in 1952. It is told in movement, so there is nothing to read or translate.

About the event

Khan Giray's Tatars raid a Polish castle and carry off Maria as she is preparing for her wedding, shutting her in the harem, where Zarema, the khan's favourite wife, will not share him. Rostislav Zakharov made the choreography to Boris Asafyev's score and Nikolai Volkov's libretto, in the ballet drama manner that ties acting closely to classical and character dance. Tivadar Márk and Nóra Rományi designed the costumes, Szilárd Kerekes and Zoltán Fülöp the sets. The Hungarian National Ballet dances, with the Opera's orchestra. Three acts and two intervals, and the house does not recommend it for children under 12.
