Bonjour Monsieur Gauguin at the Museum of Fine Arts

Hungary's first large-scale Gauguin exhibition, assembled from loans by nearly forty public and private collections. It follows him from Paris and Brittany to Martinique, Tahiti and the Marquesas.

Judit Geskó curates, and she has hung the work both chronologically and by the ideas Gauguin was chasing, so the rooms track a pictorial language pulling away from Naturalism and Impressionism towards form, colour, musicality, myth and symbol. A good deal of space goes to the people around him: Pissarro, Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Émile Bernard, Paul Sérusier and the Hungarian József Rippl-Rónai, alongside writers such as Mallarmé and Strindberg. The Musée d'Orsay is singled out among the lenders. It fills the ground floor temporary exhibition hall, the museum suggests giving it an hour and a half, and it is ticketed, with guided tours bookable separately.
